About our CSA
The Greenwood Heights CSA connects our members with Hearty Roots Community Farm and Montgomery Place Orchards, both located in the Hudson Valley. Our members get beautiful, fresh produce at a great price, and in return our farmers are guaranteed customers for the season.
Members visit the Greenwood Heights CSA distribution location in Brooklyn on Saturday mornings from June to November to pick up a weekly or biweekly share of the farm's produce, delivered fresh that morning. (Read more about the CSA movement.)
All of the produce is harvested at the peak of freshness, taste, and nutrition. Hearty Roots is deeply committed to environmentally-friendly and sustainable growing practices that in many ways exceed organic standards. The farmers use absolutely no chemical pesticides or fertilizers. Hearty Roots grows dozens of varieties of produce, chosen for their excellent flavor. Each week members get a variety of what's in season at the moment, for example:
- Spring: Lettuce, beets, radishes, cooking greens, green garlic, peas...
- Summer: Zucchini, tomatoes, eggplants, peppers, greens, beans, carrots, onions, garlic, cabbage, fennel, broccoli, melons, peaches, apricots...
- Fall: Winter squash, kale, carrots, turnips, fennel, potatoes, beets, apples, pears...
In addition to fruits and vegetables, our CSA also offers our members shares in farm fresh eggs and bread produced from locally sourced and milled grains.
Listen to what members have to say! "We got an awesome variety of vegetables every week. There was no food monotony in our house." "The farm share changed our eating and cooking habits for the better. It was great to feel connected to the neighborhood!"
